Every 10 years, following the decennial census, the Board of Legislators meets to consider county legislative district lines.
Why redistricting?
- Westchester's population has grown to more than 1 million – an increase of nearly 6 percent over the last 10 years. (https://data.census.gov/
cedsci/profile?g= 0500000US36119) - Population growth has varied from area to area within the County. (https://www.lohud.com/story/
news/2021/08/18/gda-2020- census-population-ny-pwes- 36119/48479353/) - The state law defining the permissible deviation in population size between County Legislative districts has changed -- from being within 10% of the mean population size for all districts to being within 5%. (https://www.nysenate.gov/
legislation/bills/2021/A229) - As a result, Westchester County's Legislative Districts must be redrawn before the next County Legislative election in 2023 in order for our districts to comply with state law.
Westchester’s Current Legislative Districts
- Westchester currently has 17 County Legislative Districts, each representing around 54,000 people per the 2010 census numbers. (https://gis.westchestergov.
