Representative Adriano Espaillat Celebrates 500 Days of American Rescue Plan, Lauds Far-Reaching Impacts in NY-13.

NEW INTERACTIVE MAP shows how the American Rescue Plan helped New York.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) celebrated 500 days since President Biden signed Democrats’ American Rescue Plan Act into law, lifesaving legislation that created millions of jobs, kickstarted a successful national vaccination program, helped schools reopen, and funded critical projects in communities across the country. The Rescue Plan ensured that American families nationwide had the support they needed during this pandemic while putting our economy back on track. “The American Rescue Plan changed the course of the COVID crisis, created millions of jobs, lowered health care costs, helped schools reopen, and provided a much-needed lifeline for families in New York’s 13th congressional district,” said Rep. Espaillat. “Democrats’ unified action in passing this transformational legislation helped Americans get vaccinated quickly, provided Child Tax Credit tax cuts to the families of 3.6 million children, and gave our community the resources necessary to come back stronger from the pandemic, with $23.8 billion in state and local relief.

“The data is clear: the American Rescue Plan helped families put food on the table, stay in their homes, and avoid economic devastation while paving the way for a stronger, faster, and more resilient economic recovery,” Rep. Espaillat continued. “As we mark this important milestone, we will continue fighting to lower costs for families and build a stronger and more inclusive economy that rewards work, not wealth.”

Insider News Center: From New York City Insider: Espaillat Urges Increased Funding for School-based Mental Health Access for BIPOC Youth.

NEW YORK, NY – Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) recently introduced a resolution calling on Congress to support mental health access to Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) youth by funding school-based mental health services.

“The rate of suicide among BIPOC youth is alarming, and it is critical we address this issue on the national level so families and schools across our communities have the necessary resources needed to combat this crisis,” said Rep. Espaillat. “The global public health pandemic ravaged the mental health and wellness of our communities, and there is a clear cry for help among BIPOC youth who were impacted at disproportionately higher rate than their peers. Black children under the age of 13 are dying by suicide at nearly twice the rate of their White counterparts and suicide is the leading cause of death among AAPI children. Additionally, insufficient mental health services paired with the stigma surrounding those very resources has contributed to what we are now witnessing as a mental health tsunami among American youth with effects growing even more rapidly among youth of color. We have a responsibility to support our vulnerable populations—and my resolution ensures we do not leave BIPOC youth behind in our efforts to address mental health needs for all.”

Insider News Center: From New York City Insider: Espaillat, Cherfilus-McCormick Lead Congressional Resolution Condemning SCOTUS Decision To Overturn Roe & Casey.

Representatives Espaillat, Cherfilus-McCormick Lead Congressional Resolution Condemning SCOTUS Decision To Overturn Roe & Casey.

Resolution Recognizes Access to Abortion Constitutes Access to Health Care as a Fundamental Liberty & The Need for Judicial Reform.

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representatives Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (FL-20) introduced a resolution condemning the United States Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey and reaffirming their commitment to advancing reproductive justice and judicial reform.

Approximately 64,000,000 women and girls of reproductive age live in the United States, and more than half of them live in states that could seek to ban or further restrict access to abortion now that the Supreme Court overturned Roe and Casey. As Justices Breyer, Sotomayor, and Kagan stated in their dissenting opinion, the holding in Dobbs results in the “curtailment of women’s right, and of their status as free and equal citizens.” Women living in poverty, people of color, undocumented persons, as well as transgender and gender non-binary individuals will be disproportionately harmed by the Supreme Court’s action. The decision to end the federal constitutional right to an abortion strips these groups of choice and will have reverberating negative personal and financial outcomes, including financial instability, the ability to attain higher education, as well as disruptions to the overall health care for people reliant on clinics for preventative care.
