As we enter the final days of April, we can’t forget that this is National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. This is something many people don’t want to talk about, but it’s an issue we must address.
I’ve dedicated my life to fighting these issues, because I believe the 1 in 5 women in the U.S. who have experienced rape or attempted rape deserved better. Either as an advocate or working for the state and federal governments, I have fought day and night to protect victims of sex trafficking, assault, and domestic violence.
We have no doubt made progress, from the Anti-Trafficking Law of 2007 to making New York just the sixth state to raise the minimum age for marriage without exceptions to 18. Yet there is still so much work ahead, as more than 40% of women and a quarter of men in the U.S. have in their life experienced sexual assault.
All my best,
Lisa
