Representative Adriano Espaillat Releases Reports Showing the Inflation Reduction Act Will Lower Health Care Costs for Local Families.

NEW YORK, NY – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) announced that families in the 13th Congressional District of New York will soon see more affordable prescription drugs for Medicare recipients and lower health insurance premiums made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act.

“For far too long, big corporations have forced many Americans to choose between paying for health care—including lifesaving medication and insurance coverage—and putting food on the table.  With the Inflation Reduction Act now the law of the land, Democrats in Congress have taken bold steps to rein in out-of-control health care costs,” said Rep. Espaillat.  “I’m proud to have voted for this transformational legislation to lower health care costs for families across my district.”

Representative Espaillat Leads Appropriations Request to Support Asylum Seekers and Families Facing Homelessness.

NEW YORK, NY – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) sent a letter to Senate and House Appropriations Committee leadership urging the inclusion of $500 million to support the Emergency Food and Shelter Traditional and Humanitarian Program. The requested funds would provide shelter, food and supportive services to individuals and families experiencing hunger or homelessness, and allow humanitarian assistance to migrant families and individuals encountered by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

“We are experiencing a growing unhoused population in communities around the nation, which is being compounded by inflation and the ongoing pandemic,” wrote Rep. Espaillat. “Without federal support, thousands of individuals and families are at risk of losing access to shelters, food, basic health, and other essential support services.

Insider News Center: From Westchester Insider: Westchester County Legislator Mary Jane Shimsky 12th District: Protocols for Black Bear Sightings in District 12.

With the recent reports of bear sightings in our district, here is some information from the NYS DEC and local law enforcement:

  • If you see a bear, never approach, surround, or attempt to touch it
  • Always leave a clear escape route for a bear
  • If you feel threatened by a bear, back away slowly, but do not run. If the bear won’t leave, make loud noises—yell, clap, blow car horns or air horns, or drum on nearby objects
  • Do not let pets or children play outside unsupervised at dusk and dawn, when bears are most active.

Although bears and other wildlife are to be appreciated and enjoyed, this should be done from a distance or from inside your home. They still pose a threat to people and pets, especially if they are protecting their cubs. In very rare cases, black bears can have rabies and can be aggressive.

If you have spotted black bear activity in real time, notify your local police department immediately. They are not able to respond to the situation after the fact.

Members of Congress Send Letter Urging Department of Transportation to Require Air Carriers to Prioritize Consumer Refunds on Flight Cancellations.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representatives Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), member of the House Appropriations Committee, and Carolyn B. Maloney (NY-12), Chairwoman of the House Oversight and Reform committee, sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation urging the agency to exercise its administrative authority and require air carriers and ticket agents to provide requested refunds to passengers when a carrier cancels or significantly changes a flight to, from, or within the United States.

Since 2020, the Department of Transportation has received an increased number of complaints and inquiries from airline consumers, who describe having been denied refunds for flights that were canceled or significantly delayed at no fault by the consumer.

“Aviation consumers are experiencing nightmare airline experiences,” wrote the Members. “We urge the Department of Transportation to exercise its administrative authority and require refunds to passengers when carriers cancel or significantly change flights to, from, or within the United States.
