New York, NY March 14, 2022- Over the last six weeks, Witness to Mass Incarceration staff and interns from Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College began a campaign to raise money to provide hats and gloves for 5,594 incarcerated people at Rikers. Our vendor shipped the Hats and Gloves and donated, with the permission of the Department of Corrections, a pair of socks for each package. All 5,594 people will be getting a package.
WE DID IT! THE HATS, GLOVES & SOCKS ARE HERE!
Today, we are pleased to announce the hats, gloves, and socks will arrive at Rikers on Thursday, March 17th.
“Witness to Mass Incarceration has already made a tremendous difference for formerly incarcerated people, especially women and LGBTQ New Yorkers, who face challenges upon their release,” said Speaker Adrienne Adams. “Their new campaign to collect and donate hats, gloves, socks, and other clothing to distribute to people detained on Rikers Island during the winter is commendable and impactful. I thank my friend Evie Litwok, the staff, and interns of WITNESS for their work and passion to improve the lives of people currently and formerly incarcerated."
Thank you to the foundations, allies, and individuals who donated: The Good People Fund, Circle for Justice Innovations (CJI), The Sills Family Foundation, Ben & Jerry’s Foundation, the Jacob and Valeria Langeloth Foundation, Francis Greenberger Charitable Fund, members of the Judaism That Stands For All congregation (SAJ), Apple Bank, CONBODY, The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice and the 265 individual donors.
